Abstract

Today, the terms of regionalization and localization are being used with the effects of globalization process. According to the globalization debate, global development can only be possible with the developments in the regional and local scale. In this context, local dynamics should be conducted for global development. Within this new world order formed by the discourses of globalization, regionalization and localization, the importance of rural areas is increasing within the frame of local dynamics. Rural areas are classified as less developed regions in the hierarchial classification of settlements. These settlements are faced with economic, social, political and, cultural problems as a result of uneven regional development. Until now, it seems that the development approach based on the single sector, namely the agricultural sector, adopted for rural areas is not enough today This situation reveals a multidimensional development approach and multi-sectoral public policies to rural areas and the need for. In this context, this study aims to discuss about social, economic, cultural, spatial and administrative dimensions of regional development paradigms for rural areas and to evaluate Turkey's current policies on rural areas in the context of regional development. So, it is possible to making inferences about how Turkey should benefit from these new development paradigms for its  rural areas.
