Religious Fundamentalism and Transformation of Pakistan’s Political Culture: Lessons for India

Aslam Khan

Abstract

Political system is generally manifested through the actions, policy programmes and operational aspects of the government, political parties, pressure groups and the public. The establishment, existence and achievements of a State depend upon a political culture, which is civic, liberal and representative. While India has established democratic institutions of governance and a system of democratic values, countries like Pakistan seem to have lost the opportunity to embark on a democratic project owing primarily to the stunted nature of their polity, institutions and more seriously the swing towards religious fundamentalism.  Over the years there has been strong resistance to democratic political culture in Pakistan. Pakistan’s shift towards Islamization under the pressure of the public and the politically motivated measures of the government changed the course of South Asian politics. The present phase of Indian polity seems to follow the path of Pakistan’s religion driven politics. The present Indian Government led by Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and its allies are of the center of criticism due to the rise of Hindu Fundamentalism, growing attacks on Minorities, Intolerance and so on. BJP and allies are promoting Hindutva ideology and the affiliated institutions are cause of fear to other minority groups due to various brutal attacks in the name of religion. The irresponsible and provocative comments and speeches from Hindu Fundamentalist groups have put the unity and diversity of country in danger. India has to learn lesson from Pakistan as they used religion as a tool for political power and now they are worst affected from the menace of terrorism. The paper will highlight this theme critically.
