Representation of Western-centric theories and concepts in Turkish Newspapers: A Socio-critical Approach
Abstract
Studies on western and Turkish modernization have been on the rise in recent years. Modernization is a process that contains the varying number of concepts that are perceived differently by different researchers and cultures. This study aims to analyze 12 newspaper articles from four different newspaper agencies. Almost every days the issues of modernization and conservatism are negotiated. This issue seems to be a productive topic that keeps Turkish citizens constantly dynamic. The process that started in the nineteenth century to modernize Ottoman Empire still continues.
This study is qualitative in nature because inductive content analysis of the terms in the newspaper articles was carried out. The content analysis was done considering the terms obtained from Şerif Mardin. The results of the study show that the chasm between modernization and conservatism has deepened in recent years because the discussions between the center and periphery are prevalent in newspaper articles. While 4 newspaper articles assessed the issue from a western-based perspective, the articles preferred to approach the issue from conservative perspectives. A reconciling perspective could not be obtained from the study. This study shows that the negotiations regarding modernization and conservatism will continue around new terms that may open new perspectives. However, the current situation indicates that conservatism is emphasized more than modernization.
