A Study of Parenting Attitudes In Terms of Different Variables (A Case Study in Kırıkkale Province)
Abstract
The present study aims to investigate the parenting attitudes of mothers with children aged 4-6 in terms of different variables. The study group consists of 260 mothers who have their children, aged 4-6, attending the independent kindergartens located in the province of Kırıkkale and agreed to participate in the study on a voluntary basis. The data for the study was collected through “Personal Information Forms” that were prepared by the researchers and the Parenting Attitude Scale that was developed by Karabulut Demir and Şendil (2008). The data was analyzed by using t-test and ANOVA. As a result of the study, a statistically significant difference was established among the average scores of permissiveness sub-dimension of the parenting attitude scale in terms of the variables of child’s age, birth order and mother’s age, while a statistically significant difference was established in the sub-dimensions of being democratic, overprotectiveness and permissiveness in terms of mother’s level of education (p<.05); and it was found that the overprotective attitude scores of employed mothers were higher than those of unemployed mothers. However, it was established that the child’s gender had no statistically significant effect on parenting attitudes (p>.05).
